The Writing Game Recollections of an Occasional Bestselling Author WA Harbinson 9781419644375 Books

This book relates the sometimes grim reality of being a writer, including what he describes as the emotionally debillitating feeling of isolation, almost relentless hard work and sometimes brutal disappointments. Harbinson includes extracts from some of his books and anecdotes including his experiences accompanying Quentin Crisp around New York City. Highlights from his book extracts for me were the passages from his biography of Charles Bronson and the book written under the pseudonym of Shaun Clarke, Underworld.

Harbinson also was famous for his books promoting the notion that UFOs were man-made, in particular the 1980 book Genesis. I was interested in his account of a series of nightmares he experienced at the time, which perhaps sheds some light into the mystery of reported bedroom abductions. He states that one of his most frequent nightmares was of being in his bedroom, recognising everything in it, and of being convinced that he was awake, in bed. Standing around his bed would be black, featureless figures. Another dream would feature malignant beings that came out of walls and closed windows to swirl around his bed. Harbinson says that he woke from such dreams by jerking upright, screaming. Might it be the case that Whitley Streiber experienced something similar? Harbinson indicates that he thinks so.

The book kept my interest all the way through, with the exception of some of the extracts from Harbinson's novels, which I skipped over.
