The book toggles back and forth between the painful childhood of Brady and the painful failed ministry career of Carey. I almost stopped reading - then I decided to skim and actually just skip most of the Brady portion. The Carey portions were tolerable, this made carrying on with the book possible for me. I'm glad I carried on! The last 1/4 or so was incredible! I had a hard time putting it down. The 1st 3/4 was such a long drawn out painful read... if you can do it, it is well written, but I couldn't handle it. I dont know much about editing, but I think Jenkins editor let him down by not insisting on that part being much more abbreviated. Due to the extremely good writing and the last 1/4 that is outstanding I give it a 4 even with my problems with the 1st 3/4.

I'm not sure how to review this book. I really want to give it 5 stars, but there are too many things that keep it from reaching that level of excellence. The writing is unquestionably good, and the premise is interesting. That said...I normally wouldn't be able to plow through a book of this length that moves so slowly. But Jenkins made me care about the characters, and I found I wanted to know how their lives panned out. I did not find them one-dimensional cardboard cutouts, as some reviews have indicated. They were completely developed and true to life. I felt for Brady, who messed up every opportunity that ever came his way, yet had enough redeeming qualities to make me want things to go right for him. Thomas and Grace were true Christians with genuine hearts for the Lord. I did find myself wishing for more action, wanting something to happen already. It was clear to me where the story was going, and where the lives of the two main characters would intersect.

Some aspects of the story's culmination bothered me. I hold Calvary and our Lord's sacrifice in deep reverence, and like Peter, I don't think anyone else is worthy to die like Him. That said, Jenkins turns the situation into an effective plot ploy, one I'm sure will resonate with many readers. I enjoyed the reading of scriptures in the cell block, although I admit to wondering if being inundated with them, page after page, might lose readers at the very time in the book when the author was trying to deliver a message of salvation. Preachy storylines bother me...I want the message to be inherent to the plot, not tacked on in a drowning wave at the end. And yet...I kept reading, despite the things that bothered me. Jenkins knows how to keep a reader with him, if only to see where in the world he's going with all the daily grind. I wouldn't call this one a page-turner, but definitely a thought-provoking read that is guaranteed to remain in the reader's mind for a good, long while.
At first I wasn't sure if I wanted to read this book it's about a bad boy (Brady) that wants to do something with his life but doens't have the guideance from a stable home life to show him the way and those leaders in school try to tell him how to make something of himself but he doesn't listen, so he heads down the path of drugs,drinking and stealing and lieing and he's also trying to take care of his younger brother, then theres the pastor that has a hard road trying to find a church to pastor then when he does find a church the one guy that is in charge when he stands up to him finds out that his daughter is living in sin and then they more or less make up impossible for them to stay so they leave and he ends up working at a prision and finds he can't minister to the immates like he wants to then the pastor and Brady meet because Brady after being in and out of prision ends up at the prision that the pastor works at and he ends up on Death row. Now all that said this book is amazing and It is long I got this as a free ebook for my kindle and I let my kindle read it to me alot because I just didn't want to put it down this book has a very surprising ending and it will stay with you, I think I will never forget this book, He did a wonderful job and I would reccommend it to everyone this book is a great witnessing tool!
I really tried to like this book, but had to quit as things just didn’t flow. The scenes really didn’t connect and the pace was slow, which is surprising as I’ve read other books by Jenkins and enjoyed them. This one had a lot of potential based on the description, but the writing just wasn’t very good and this one needs a good editor to help hook the reader much earlier vs. slogging through it. I would give this one a wide pass.
This book presented the story of realistic characters in our society today. A troubled youth who was given opportunity after opportunity to change his behavior and the real story of addiction and turmoil. A Minister who was unwavering in his faith even tho at times discouraged due to many circumstances surrounding his life story. The ending presented a very humanistic version of exactly how much God really loved us and how His Son gave so much willingly that we might live eternally with him. What a Testimony of Love portrayed by these two people and what a testimony they left for all the characters of the book but also to every one who reads the book.
