The contest behind the book picks the best of the new up-and-comers and gives readers the first glimpse of these many talented writers that will likely go on to become big names in the industry.
This first volume started it all and is definitely a must read for Sci-fi fans as the stories hail from different worlds, different cultures and different sub-genres. It creates a good pace as from story to story the reader never knows what the next one holds in store for them.

From an historical and nostalgic sense, this 1986 edition of Writers of the Future offers an intriguing, retrospective view. For example, in "Beast," pages 3 through 9 inclusive, illustrated, by Jon Gustafson, a farmer tractor crash victim is uniquely intercepted by a Tyrannosaurus Rex and a traveler. My impressions, of course, return to the agrarian careerists who felt such intimidation in the light of competition and the Information Age, the agrarian careerist who might have minded the long working days but who did not have so many complaints about what some perceived as the city-versus-country lifestyles, favoring the simple, physical lifestyle. Whatever to do when farmers could be rendered as not totally necessary? Perhaps in the author's tapestry of words, a lesson to be shared when the competition is squeezed out when the competition does not have a livelihood elsewhere or has little opportunity in the Information Age to acquire new marketable skills. A provocative story, indeed.
An older collection of sci-fi short stories, but still the usual mix of quality and the easily forgettable. I was disappointed that a couple of the authors never did move on to novels (I looked), particularly after reading Stephen Milligan's Red Eyes. Even my least favorite story, The Scholar of the Pear Tree Garden, was an interesting look at how important freedom and belief in ones own contributions can be.
For those who enjoy sci-fi or are aspiring authors but have never read one of these Writers of the Future collections, you are missing out. The stories, even when they aren't great, often give you new worlds to think about and tips from authors on writing better. The article on suspense from L. Ron Hubbard in this edition was especially interesting.
This "Best of" covers stories from the length and breadth of the WOTF contest. A must read for potential contestants and SFF fans alike. My favorite was the Dave Farland story, but they were all good and some stuck with me long after I was finished.

L. Ron Hubbard is well known in the Science Fiction community as "the world's most prolific dead author," but perhaps his greatest contribution to the genre is the Writers of the Future contest.

This program is open to new writers only, and all work is reviewed by noted SF authors, anonymously (the submissions are numbered & coded.) The best from each quarter are chosen, and there are monetary prizes for the quarterly and annual winners. Part of the prize is that the work is published at the end of the year in that year’s book. Another part is that the winners are flown to LA for the awards ceremony.

Thus, each volume is completely full of new, unpublished work, by new authors chosen by the best writers in the field.

This is great for readers, because it ensures that nearly any fan will find a good proportion of the volume to be of interest to them, and the entire volume is full of well written stories. Interspersed in the book are how-to tips for new authors, so the book functions as a mini-textbook on SF writing, with articles about the business and well-written stories to demonstrate good writing.

But that is not the best part, the best part is that the program encourages new writers in the best possible manner—it pays them well for their work and publicizes it.

Over the 2+ decades that the program has run, it has launched a sizable number of new SF authors into their careers.

Any volume of this series is full of good reads, and they are often very fresh views in a field which has, over the decades, ranged from fresh and experimental to stodgy and hidebound. If you haven’t read a particular volume, you cannot go wrong in reading it.
